Corporate Lingo, Points and Miles Edition
Whenever I would start training at each of my college summer internships and in my first corporate job, the staff would always say “it will take time to get the lingo down.”
This three letter word means this. Or this number means that. Chances are you know what we mean by this. Every company has their own terminology and abbreviations to make things more efficient (and very hard on new employees).
Credit cards along with points and miles are the same way. For calculating value in a point or mile redemption, there is Cent Per Point (CPP) as an example.
American Express is usually shortened to “Amex.”
This list could go on and on, but today we are covering the major point currencies – which credit card company claims them, what the points and miles are called, and their abbreviations.
When it comes to major points and miles currencies, there are only 5 major ones you need to remember:
Credit Card Company – Point/Mile Currency Name (Abbreviation)
1️⃣ Chase – Ultimate Rewards Points (UR Points)
2️⃣ American Express – Membership Rewards Points (MR Points)
3️⃣ Capital One – Reward Miles (C1 Miles)
4️⃣ Citi – ThankYou Points (TY Points)
5️⃣ Bilt Points (Bilt Points)
Many blogs and content creators (including us) enjoy shortening these to keep information simple.
It is much easier to write “MR Points” as opposed to writing “American Express Membership Rewards Points” each time.
These major credit card points and miles currencies are where 99% of our transfer partner redemptions originate from.
We cover each of these currencies in depth so be sure to check out each guide linked above for more information and travel examples.
